Smartset® is Lucchini RS’s patented wheelset that features an electronic board, capable of transmitting real-time information about the loads and stresses experienced by the wheels and axles of a train. The data collected is managed by a specific algorithm, which allows the development of a model that accurately predicts stress on these components. This technology enables an operator or rolling stock owner to implement refined maintenance plans based on actual train usage, reducing the costs of unscheduled train stops, which are currently based on predefined and non-optimized inspection intervals.

Smartset® is the result of a research program by Lucchini RS engineers, developed in collaboration with Politecnico di Milano. It offers another safety benefit for the railway line, as the sensors that record the stresses on the wheels and axles are combined with a geolocation system. This system can identify the points on the network with the greatest impact on the rolling stock, providing track maintenance teams with exact locations to check.
