The Algiers Metro Company (EMA) was established in 1984 as a delegated contracting authority of the Ministry of Transport to oversee the creation, design, and management of an underground urban railway network and surface passenger transport. Today, it is a Public Economic Company and joint-stock company with a share capital of 380,000,000 DA.

EMA has broadened its scope over the years to include the development of transport-related study and engineering capacities, traffic plans, and an Urban Transport Design Office -BETUR- which is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company.

Since 2005, EMA has been entrusted with new projects aimed at the development of urban transport, such as the construction and operation of tramways on national territory, the renovation and technological upgrading of cable cars and gondolas in various cities of Algeria.

As a delegated contracting authority of the Ministry of Transport, the Algiers Metro Company’s mission is to conduct urban transport projects on behalf of the Algerian state. The Company focuses on providing studies, construction, and operation of urban passenger transport projects, including metros, tramways, and cable transport, in several cities across the country.
